Soaring Like Eagles


Patrick Lam is the co-founder, retired CEO and Group Managing Director of ASM Pacific Technology Ltd. Under his leadership for more than 31 years, the company has been profitable for every full-year operation, grown from US$5,000 initial funding to a market capitalization exceeding US$2.8 billion at the time of his retirement as Honorary Chairman, and is the global number one semiconductor assembly and packaging equipment company with over 8,000 employees worldwide. The company also has the most complete product offerings in its industry, covering all major assembly and packaging processes unmatched by its competitors. In addition, as a publicly-listed company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, ASM delivers more than a 23% growth of valuation per annum since its initial public offering in 1988.

With over three and a half decades of industrial experience in the computer memory and semiconductor equipment businesses in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and Malaysia, Dr. Lam has been profiled in leading business and semiconductor industry publications such as BusinessWeek, Solid State Technology, Electronic Business Asia, in addition to regular local media coverage. He was named “Ten Top Guns” among all of Asia’s electronic industry executives in 1994 and listed among the top 100 CEOs in Who’s Who in Semiconductors 2003: Leading and Influential Individuals in the Global Semiconductor Industry. Moreover, his management was widely recognized in the finance community, with ASM being named “Top Ten Best Managed Companies in Hong Kong” by Finance Asia in 2004.

Dr. Lam has also contributed to the industries in Hong Kong and China in various capacities. From 1986 to 1989, he was a member of the Industry Development Board of Hong Kong, advising the Government on all industrial matters. He was also the Vice president of the Hong Kong Critical Components Manufacturers Association. Since 1993, he has been an Honorary Advisor to the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre. Furthermore, because of his contributions to the city of Shenzhen in China, he was awarded the title of “Honorary Citizen” there.

Currently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), established by the Hong Kong Government to promote technological advances through applied research. He is also an Adjunct Professor of the Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management Department, City University of Hong Kong.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in Canada, a Master of Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and an Engineering Doctorate in Engineering Management from the City University of Hong Kong. He is also named a University Fellow of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, cited for his “ardent support of higher education, particularly in the area of research and development”. He is the author of the book Soaring Like Eagles: ASM’s High-Tech Journey in Asia (John Wiley & Sons, 2006).
